Two days on Lake Alqueva: a weekend based in Mourão

What actually fits into a weekend on Alqueva without rushing: the river beach, Monsaraz and the night sky, with real driving times.

Wide view over Lake Alqueva from the hill at Monsaraz, the reservoir's islands in the distance and the green Alentejo plain in front.

Two days on Alqueva is enough for the essentials, as long as you resist trying to see everything. The region is big and distances are deceptive — anyone trying to fit Évora, Amieira and the observatory into the same weekend spends it in the car.

This plan is based in Mourão and deliberately picks three things: the water, Monsaraz and the sky.

Friday night or Saturday morning

Arriving on Friday evening buys you a whole extra morning. From Lisbon it's two and a half hours; from Badajoz, an hour and twenty.

Day 1 — Water

Morning. Straight to Mourão river beach, five minutes away. It's the largest on the lake, with a Blue Flag, free parasols on the lawn and an enclosed floating pool for children. You cross a wooden boardwalk to the island.

Lunch. At the beach club if it's open, or back in the village.

Afternoon. Between two and five in summer, nothing happens outdoors — there are fifteen days a month above 35°C. This is pool or siesta time.

Late afternoon. Climb Mourão castle, ten minutes on foot from the centre, for the plain from above and the sun going down.

Evening. Dinner in the village. Then lights off and look up — Alqueva was the first place in the world certified for star tourism, and you don't need the observatory to see the Milky Way.

Day 2 — Monsaraz

Early. Leave for Monsaraz around nine — twenty minutes, across the bridge. Arriving before the coach parties, which turn up around eleven, changes the visit completely.

Walk the two main streets, go into the parish church, climb the castle and do the wall circuit. The view over the lake is why you came.

Lunch. In one of the restaurants inside the walls, ideally with a terrace facing the lake. Book in summer.

Afternoon. Two options:

  • A winery in Reguengos, ten minutes away, with a booked tasting. Alqueva wineries →
  • Aldeia da Luz and the Museu da Luz — the village that went under the water in 2002, rebuilt two kilometres uphill. Twenty minutes from Mourão, and the most moving visit in the region.

Late afternoon. A last swim before packing.

If you come in winter

The plan changes. The river beach closes, but the sky gets much better: longer nights and cleaner air. Worth inverting the priorities — Monsaraz and the wineries by day, and a booked session at the Cumeada observatory at night, 25 minutes away.
