.The house

A whitewashed house, its courtyard facing the sun

It's a plain Alentejo house — the kind with walls thick enough to stay cool through August. Inside: whitewash, exposed beams, jute rugs, terracotta. Nothing staged. Things that get used.

The living room opens onto the kitchen, and the kitchen opens onto the courtyard. In practice you spend the day going in and out, which is exactly how the house was meant to work.

Open-plan living room and kitchen with a deep blue sofa, a table laid with blue-and-white striped linen, a paper lantern and a jute rug.
Rectangular plunge pool set into the whitewashed courtyard, with two white canvas and wood deckchairs, a clay urn and concrete steps in full sun.

.The courtyard

The pool is where the day happens

The courtyard gets sun from morning until late afternoon. The pool is set between whitewashed walls, with deckchairs, shade when you want it, and nobody watching.

It's where the day ends after the river beach, and where the evening starts before you head out to dinner.

.Where it is

On Alqueva, on the quiet side of the lake

Mourão sits on the eastern shore of Lake Alqueva, on the quieter side. Monsaraz is visible across the water, twenty minutes away by car over the bridge.

It's a working village — grocer, café, butcher — not a postcard. If you want Alqueva without the crowds of the busier stretches, this is the right side of the lake.

Lake Alqueva at dusk, its arms of water reaching between cork oak pastures, with a dirt track running down towards the reservoir.
