Monsaraz is a walled village on a hilltop above Lake Alqueva. Cobbled streets, whitewashed houses, a castle at the highest point. It's the most reproduced image of this part of the Alentejo — and, unlike many such places, it holds up against the photograph.
From Mourão it's about twenty minutes by car, across the bridge over Alqueva.
What to see
The walls and the village gate. You enter through an arched gateway with the white clock tower above it. Everyone stops to photograph it, and rightly.
Rua Direita. The village is essentially two parallel streets joined by alleys. It takes twenty unhurried minutes, and unhurried is the point.
The castle. At the northern end, on the highest ground. The view over the lake is why most people come. The old parade ground is now an arena.
The parish church of Nossa Senhora da Lagoa. A white and ochre facade with two bell towers, on the main square, with the pillory in front.
The Fresco Museum. Small, in the old town hall and courthouse, with a 15th-century wall painting that's unusual in Portugal.

How long it takes
A morning or an afternoon is enough to see the village properly, castle and a coffee stop included. With lunch, allow half a day.
Monsaraz isn't a full-day visit — which is the good news, because it pairs well with something else. River beach in the morning, Monsaraz in the afternoon. Or Monsaraz in the morning and the Dark Sky at night.
When to go (this matters)
Coach parties arrive around eleven and leave around five. Between those hours, in summer, the narrow streets are crowded.
Before ten or after five, the village is a completely different thing. The light is better too — late in the day the white walls turn gold and the lake goes silver.
Parking
You can't drive inside the walls. There are free car parks at the entrance, and from there it's all on foot. The climb is short but it is a climb, on uneven cobbles — comfortable shoes help.
Eating in Monsaraz
There are several restaurants inside the walls, some with terraces facing the lake. It's pricier than the surrounding villages, and in summer booking is advisable. Suggestions across the region →
And afterwards
Ten minutes away is Reguengos de Monsaraz, where the wineries of the sub-region are. About twenty minutes away, across the bridge, is Mourão and the largest river beach on the lake.
