Monsaraz castle: the view over Alqueva

The medieval castle at the top of Monsaraz, the view over the lake, and what to know before you climb. Twenty minutes from Mourão.

Monsaraz castle occupies the northern end of the village, on the highest ground. This is where you get one of the best views over water in Portugal: Lake Alqueva spreads out below, with its islands and inlets, until it disappears towards Spain.

Up to the keep

The climb follows the cobbled street that runs the length of the village. It's short — ten minutes from the main gate — but it is uphill, and the cobbles are uneven.

At the top, the keep and the wall walk are the viewpoint. Do the full circuit: the lake on one side, the Alentejo plain on the other, as far as you can see.

The climb to the walls. Uneven steps, and no handrail for much of it.

The parade ground

The castle's interior, the old parade ground, was adapted over time and now serves as an arena for bullfights and village events. It's an open space with stone terraces around it.

How long

The castle takes under an hour. But it's the kind of place where you stay longer than you planned, especially late in the day.

The history, briefly

Monsaraz has been settled since long before Portugal existed. The village was taken from the Moors in the 13th century and given to the Order of the Temple, who rebuilt the castle. The position explains itself: from here you control the whole Guadiana valley and the frontier with Castile.

The walls you see today are the result of successive building over centuries, including later adaptations for artillery.

Before you climb

  • Comfortable shoes. Uneven cobbles and steps.
  • Very little shade. In summer, avoid the middle of the day.
  • You can't drive up. The car park is at the village entrance.
  • Check opening hours and access with the Monsaraz tourist office before going, especially out of season — they vary.

And around it

The castle is the high point of a visit to Monsaraz, but the village is worth the full two hours. What to see in Monsaraz →
