Three days on Lake Alqueva, based in Mourão

A day-by-day plan for a long weekend on Alqueva: river beach, Monsaraz, Dark Sky and wineries, with real driving times and an order that works.

Written by Francisco Campos2 min read
Lake Alqueva at dusk, its arms of water reaching between cork oak pastures, with a dirt track running down towards the reservoir.

Three days is enough to see the essentials of Alqueva without rushing. This plan starts from Mourão, on the eastern shore, and was built around one idea: one thing a day, and the rest of the time for nothing at all.

All distances are real, and all by car.

Day 1 — Water

Morning. Arrive, drop the bags, and go straight to Mourão river beach — five minutes. It's the largest on the lake, with a Blue Flag, free parasols on the lawn and an enclosed floating pool for children. Stay until lunch.

Lunch. At the beach club if it's open, or back in the village.

Afternoon. Serious heat between two and five. This is pool time, or siesta time — in the Alentejo in August, that isn't laziness, it's strategy.

Late afternoon. Climb up to Mourão castle for the village from above and the sun dropping over the plain. Ten minutes on foot from the centre.

Evening. Dinner in the village, Alentejo cooking. Then lights off and look up. The sky here is among the best in Europe.

Day 2 — Monsaraz

Early. Leave for Monsaraz around nine — twenty minutes, across the bridge. Arriving before the coach parties makes all the difference: until eleven the village is practically yours.

Walk the two main streets, go into the parish church, climb the castle and do the wall circuit. The view over the lake is why you came.

Lunch. In one of the restaurants inside the walls, ideally with a terrace. Book in summer.

Afternoon. Down to the lake on the Monsaraz side, or ten minutes on to Reguengos de Monsaraz for a winery visit and tasting — book ahead.

Evening. If you've booked a session, this is the night for the Dark Sky observatory at Cumeada (about 20 minutes from Mourão).

Day 3 — Slowly

Morning. Whatever appeals:

  • A boat trip on the lake, from Amieira or Monsaraz. One to three hours.
  • Aldeia da Luz and the Museu da Luz — the village that went under the water in 2002 and was rebuilt two kilometres uphill. About 20 minutes, in the Mourão municipality. The most moving visit in the region.
  • Nothing. Pool, book, courtyard.

Lunch. At home, with what you bought at the village grocer and butcher. It's almost always the best meal of the stay.

Afternoon. A last swim, then the road.

Planning notes

Best time. May, June and September. July and August are very hot, but that's when the water is best.

A car is essential. There's no useful public transport between these points.

Book what needs booking. Observatory session, wineries, and Monsaraz restaurants in summer. The rest you can improvise.
