You don't need to hire a houseboat to get out on the Great Lake. The simplest way to see it from the water is a one- to three-hour boat trip with someone else at the helm, from Monsaraz or Amieira Marina — and then sleep in a house on dry land.

The two bases: Monsaraz and Amieira Marina
Lake Alqueva covers 250 km² with more than a thousand kilometres of shoreline, yet passenger boats leave from just two places.
Monsaraz lake beach, below the walled hilltop village, is the closer one — about 20 minutes from the house. The Monsaraz nautical centre is here, and it is the base for Alqueva Cruzeiros, which runs all year, and Sem-Fim, with its sailing boat and yacht.
Amieira Marina, in the municipality of Portel, is Alqueva's original nautical centre and the houseboat base. It has its own cruises and the lake's biggest beach next door. It is 50 minutes from the house: you have to drive round the lake.
From May to October, Alqueva Cruzeiros also opens seasonal stands at Amieira, Alqueva and Azenhas d'El Rei beaches. At the time of writing, no operator advertises regular departures from Mourão beach: Mourão beach is for swimming; for a boat, you go to Monsaraz.
Trips from Monsaraz
Alqueva Cruzeiros has the widest range of public trips, with daily departures and online booking. As of September 2026, its website lists these "from" prices per person:

Children under 5 go free and ages 5 to 10 pay half. Every trip can be booked privately, and one boat has a canopy and wheelchair access.
Sem-Fim does something different: it sails a Dutch sailing barge built in 1913, 17 metres long with a shallow draught. Programmes range from an hour under sail to two hours with an Alentejo snack and a stop at Ilha Dourada, or three hours with lunch on board (minimum 8 people). There is also a yacht for sunset. The nautical centre is open 10am to 7pm daily from June to September, and 10am to 5pm the rest of the year, closed Wednesdays and Thursdays. Sailing prices are not published: ask on the Sem-Fim website.
Cruises at Amieira Marina
Amieira Marina runs two kinds of boat. The Guadiana Rio carries 35 to 120 passengers on three routes; the Alcarreche and Degebe are smaller, for 6 to 22. Prices per person as of September 2026:

Over-60s get 10% off and children aged 3 to 12, with their parents, 50%. The website publishes no timetable — cruises run "with no predefined times". You book on the Amieira Marina website and confirm the departure time there.
What you actually see
Less than you might imagine, and it helps to know that beforehand. Alqueva is a lake of low shores and long horizons. What there is:
The islands. When the reservoir filled, the hilltops stayed above water and are now islands covered in holm oaks. Ilha Dourada — "Golden Island", off Monsaraz — is the classic swim stop; the water averages 26°C in summer.
Monsaraz from below. From the boat, the walled village becomes a line of stone along the ridge, above the water. It is the best photograph of the trip.
The open lake and the Guadiana. The one-hour Alqueva Cruzeiros route heads north to the mouth of the Azevel and the Guadiana, where the lake forms the border with Spain.
The dam. Only on Amieira's ninety-minute route. Seen from below, the wall gives you the scale of the thing.
Birds. Grey herons on the shore, kites overhead — the guide to birdwatching on Alqueva says what to look for.
What you do not see on the regular trips is Aldeia da Luz, the village moved uphill when the water rose. No published route passes it. You visit by road, 20 minutes from the house, and it pairs well with a boat trip on the same day.
At sunset
The best time, no argument: low light on the water and, in summer, the only part of the day when being outdoors is pleasant. Alqueva Cruzeiros runs a 90-minute "Sunset" trip with drinks on board; Sem-Fim does sunset on the yacht, with a sparkling-wine cocktail, over two hours. Afterwards, the Alqueva night sky does the rest.
Canoe, kayak and paddleboard
If you would rather paddle than be carried, there are three confirmed options:
- At Monsaraz beach and Amieira, Alqueva Cruzeiros hires kayaks and paddleboards from 10am to 7pm: currently €10 for half an hour and €15 for an hour. Pedal boats for 4 to 5 people cost €15 for half an hour.
- At the Monsaraz nautical centre, Sem-Fim hires kayaks, pedal boats and paddleboards at €10 per hour per person.
- After dark, Dark Sky Alqueva runs a night canoe trip with a partner from the Moura nautical station, next to the dam: about 2h30, from sunset to the Milky Way, landing on an island for guided stargazing and regional snacks. Currently €48 per adult and €24 per child up to 12, subject to booking and weather.
On a lake this size the wind gets up in the afternoon. Paddling early in the morning, close to the beach, is what works.
When to go and how long
Season. Monsaraz operates all year; the seasonal stands from May to October. Spring and early autumn are best. The wine-and-tapas trip only exists from October to May, precisely because nobody wants two hours in the summer sun.
Length. An hour is enough to get the measure of the lake. Ninety minutes with a swim is the best balance. Two and a half hours is for people who genuinely like boats — out on open water, the scenery repeats.
With children. An hour in the morning, or the trip with the swim stop. Hat, sun cream and water; shade on board is whatever the canopy gives, if there is one. More ideas in Alqueva with kids.
From the house
From Casa de Santa Margarida in Mourão, the plan that works is this: the lake beach in the morning, 5 minutes away; lunch; a siesta by the courtyard pool; then a 20-minute drive to Monsaraz for the sunset boat. Save Amieira, 50 minutes away, for a full day on the far side of the lake.

Do I need to book in advance?
Yes, especially from June to September and always for sunset trips. Group trips have a minimum number of passengers (12 to 15 with Alqueva Cruzeiros, 8 for the Sem-Fim lunch sail) and only leave once they reach it. Amieira Marina publishes no fixed timetable, so booking is also how you find out when the boat leaves.
Which boat trip is best with children?
A one-hour trip in the morning, or the ninety-minute one with a swim stop at Ilha Dourada. Anything longer, under the July or August sun, wears them out. With Alqueva Cruzeiros, children under 5 go free and ages 5 to 10 pay half; at Amieira Marina, ages 3 to 12 get 50% off when travelling with parents. Can you kayak, canoe or paddleboard on Alqueva?
Yes. At Monsaraz beach and Amieira you can hire kayaks, paddleboards and pedal boats by the half hour or hour. Sem-Fim hires the same kind of equipment at the Monsaraz nautical centre. And there is a night canoe trip, from sunset to the Milky Way, run with Dark Sky Alqueva from the Moura nautical station next to the dam.
Can you see Aldeia da Luz from the boat?
Not on the regular trips. The published routes go north from Monsaraz to the mouth of the Azevel and the Guadiana, or from Amieira to the dam, Amieira village and Estrela village. Luz — the village rebuilt when the water rose — is visited by road, 20 minutes from the house, and pairs well with a boat trip on the same day.
