Sleeping on the largest artificial lake in western Europe is one of Alqueva's most talked-about experiences — and one of the few things in Portugal you can't do anywhere else at this scale.
You don't need a boat licence
It's the question everyone asks. For craft of this kind on inland water, operation is covered by a short briefing from the operator when you set off — basic manoeuvres, mooring, the rules of the waterway and where you can and can't go.
In practice: someone who has never driven a boat can do it. Speeds are low and the lake is large and calm.
Exact conditions vary between operators and can change. Confirm directly with whoever you rent from, before booking.
Where you start
The main base is Amieira Marina, in the Portel municipality, which is Alqueva's boating hub. There are also operations from other points on the lake.
From Mourão, Amieira is about an hour by car — the lake has to be driven around.
What they're like
Houseboats have cabins, a bathroom, a kitchen and an upper deck. Sizes vary, typically from four up to ten or twelve people.
They're rented for minimum periods — usually two or three days, more in high season. You cruise during the day and moor in a cove at the end of the afternoon, where you spend the night.
What to actually expect
Distances on the lake are big and speeds are low. A day's cruising covers less than you'd imagine.
There isn't much to stop at. Much of the shoreline is open country, with no jetties or villages. That's the appeal — but do your shopping first.
In summer it's very hot and shade on board is limited. The upper deck in mid-afternoon in August is uninhabitable.
At night, the sky. Moored in the middle of the lake, without a single light around you, the Alqueva sky is as good as it gets. For many people that alone makes it worth it.
An alternative
If the idea is to see the region — Monsaraz, beaches, wineries, observatory — and have the lake nearby without living on it, it makes more sense to stay on land and take a boat trip for a few hours.
Trips leave from Monsaraz and Amieira, last one to three hours, and sunset is the best hour.
