Festivals and events in Mourão through the year

Mourão's traditional festivals, roughly when they happen, and where to check the official calendar before planning a trip.

Mourão is a small village, and festivals show. For a few days a year it fills with people who've come home, a stage goes up in the square, and everyone eats in the street until late.

If you happen to be here for one, it's among the best things that can happen to your trip. Worth planning around.

The village festival: Nossa Senhora das Candeias

The festival honouring Nossa Senhora das Candeias, Mourão's patron saint, is the biggest of the year. It falls around the turn of January into February, with a procession, mass, a street party, and the parish church and castle lit up.

It's when the village is fullest — and it's a festival for local people, not an event laid on for visitors. You go, you eat, you watch.

Through the year

Beyond the patron saint's festival, Mourão's calendar typically includes fairs tied to the farming year, to crafts and to wine, mostly between spring and early autumn, plus a summer cultural programme that runs alongside the river beach season.

Around the region

Outside Mourão, two things usually justify the drive:

  • Monsaraz holds events tied to its medieval past and to wine, which fill the walled village.
  • Reguengos de Monsaraz has programming around the wineries and the harvest, in late summer.

As with Mourão, check dates on the respective council websites before counting on them.

And if there's no festival on

That's fine too. The village on an ordinary day is what most people come here for: quiet, a river beach five minutes away, Monsaraz twenty, and a night sky that has all but vanished from Europe.
