Mérida is two hours from Mourão. Not an afternoon: a full day, or a night away. That said, Augusta Emerita was one of the capitals of Roman Hispania, and what survives has no equal on the peninsula.

What the ensemble is

Founded in 25 BC on the orders of Augustus, the city keeps twenty-nine listed elements across some 37 hectares. UNESCO inscribed it as World Heritage in 1993.

It isn't a ruin fenced off on the outskirts: the remains sit inside the living city, and you step from a street of shops into a Roman amphitheatre with no transition.

The theatre

Commissioned by the consul Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa in 15–16 BC, it's the piece everyone knows. The stage front, with its two tiers of columns, is still standing.

It shares a site with the amphitheatre, so you see both on one visit.

The temple of Diana

In the middle of town, wedged between buildings. The columns rise straight off the street — the sort of thing you pass on the way to lunch.

The Roman bridge

Almost eight hundred metres over the Guadiana — the same river that forms Alqueva two hundred kilometres upstream. You cross it on foot, and from it you see the Moorish alcazaba.

When it makes sense

Honestly: not as a day trip from the house. Four hours of driving in one day ruins the day.

It works two ways. On the journey in or out, if you're coming through Spain — Mérida is 50 minutes from Badajoz. Or as a night away in the middle of a longer stay, coming back the next day via Elvas.

Common questions

How far is Mérida from Mourão?

About two hours by car, 140 kilometres. It isn't a half-day outing: it takes a full day, or a night away.

What is in the archaeological ensemble?

Twenty-nine listed elements across some 37 hectares: the Roman theatre, the amphitheatre, the circus, the temple of Diana, the bridge over the Guadiana, and Visigothic and Moorish remains. It was listed as World Heritage in 1993.

Is it worth it from Alqueva?

Yes, with the right plan. Two hours each way makes it a whole day. It works better on the way in or out, especially if you're entering Portugal via Badajoz.

What are the opening hours?

The site opens daily, 9am to 8pm in summer and 9.30am to 6pm in winter. There are themed guided tours and a night route with special lighting. Worth confirming before you go.
