The Monsaraz lake beach (Praia Fluvial de Monsaraz) sits at the Monsaraz nautical centre on the shore of Lake Alqueva, on the slope below the walled village. It holds a Blue Flag for 2026, the bathing season runs from 1 June to 13 September, and it is one of the six lifeguarded beaches on the lake.
From Casa de Santa Margarida in Mourão it is about 20 minutes by car, across the bridge over the Alqueva. From the beach up to Monsaraz village is another five minutes — which is what makes this beach different from the others: you can do the swim and the village in the same day without any real logistics.
What's at the beach
It opened in 2017 and is regarded as the first lake beach on the Alqueva. According to Reguengos de Monsaraz town council it is around 150 metres long — the Environment Agency's bathing-water profile records a 120-metre frontage — with sand, a lawn with shade, and a floating pool with separate children's and adults' areas.
On land, this is what the council lists for the bathing season:
- lifeguard tower and post;
- first-aid post with a defibrillator;
- public showers and toilets;
- restaurant, bars and terraces;
- playground and picnic area;
- mooring and a boat-launching ramp;
- kiosks selling beach goods, drinks, fast food and ice cream;
- parking for 500 cars, including reduced-mobility bays.
Local operators run boat trips and water sports from the nautical centre. The council doesn't specify which; regional portals mention sailing, canoeing, paddleboarding and wakeboarding. Confirm directly with whichever operator is working that season.
Blue Flag and the other flags
The beach is on the ABAAE's 2026 list of awarded beaches for the Alentejo, and has held a Blue Flag every year since 2017. The list is published annually and can change; check bandeiraazul.abaae.pt before relying on it.
In recent seasons the council has also flown:
- Accessible Beach — in 2019 it won first prize in the national "Praia + Acessível" programme;
- Gold Quality from Quercus, the environmental NGO, for bathing-water quality in consecutive years;
- Nautical Station of Portugal;
- ColorADD, a colour-coding system that lets colour-blind visitors read the safety flags (green, yellow, red) and information boards — it was the first beach on the Alqueva to adopt it.
Bathing season and lifeguards
In 2026 the bathing season runs from 1 June to 13 September (ABAAE and the Environment Agency's bathing-water profile). For the 2024 and 2025 seasons the council announced lifeguard cover from 9am to 7pm. We did not find the official 2026 notice with hours; assume the same pattern, but check the council's website.
The Environment Agency tests the water monthly through the season. Because this is a reservoir, there is an alert system for cyanobacteria blooms, with visual inspection and laboratory analysis. In practice: respect the flag and the signage, and if bathing is advised against, stay out of the water.
Accessibility
Together with Mourão, this is the best-equipped beach on the lake for reduced mobility. The council lists ramps into the water, amphibious wheelchairs, amphibious walking frames and crutches, and reserved parking. The 2019 award was not by chance.
Getting there and parking
The beach is on municipal road CM 1127 at kilometre 3, below Monsaraz. Coming from Mourão you cross the bridge over the Alqueva, head for Monsaraz and, before the climb to the village, take the Telheiro road towards the Centro Náutico. It is signposted.
The car park has 500 spaces, which on an August Saturday matters compared with beaches where parking is tight. We have no official confirmation that it is free; expect it to be, but we don't guarantee it.
In 2024 the council ran a free weekend bus in summer, looping through every village in the municipality, stopping in Monsaraz and reaching the beach at 10.20am. If you are without a car, check the council's website to see whether it is repeated.
With children
It is an easy beach. The sand is short and flat, there is a lawn, a playground, a picnic area, a first-aid post, and the floating pool has a children's section. Natural shade, as on every Alqueva beach, is scarce: Visit Portugal mentions parasol hire, but bring proper sun protection.
If you have very small children, the Mourão lake beach is still the simplest on the Alqueva — a netted enclosed floating pool, around 45 free parasols, changing rooms — and it is five minutes from the house. There are more ideas in Alqueva with kids.
Best time, and how to pair it with the village
The plan that works is the reverse of what most people do: beach in the morning, village in the late afternoon.
The coach parties reach Monsaraz around eleven and leave around five. If you get to the beach at nine or ten, the water is calmer and the car park is empty. Have lunch at the beach restaurant or take a picnic to the tables. After five, drive up to the village — five minutes — and stay for sunset at the castle, with the whole lake below you. The light at that hour is the best of the day, and the village is quiet again.

Staying in Mourão, it is a fair question. Both have a Blue Flag, Accessible Beach status and Quercus Gold Quality, and they are 20 minutes apart.

Mourão wins for a quick dip, for small children, and for not having to think about shade. Monsaraz wins when you want beach, restaurant, a boat and the village in one day — and the sunset from above.

What to bring
Water shoes or flip-flops, because the lake bed is not always sand. A hat and sunscreen. A large towel for the lawn. And if you plan to eat at the beach on an August weekend, arrive before midday.
