Badajoz in a day: the nearest city, 1h20 from Alqueva

The alcazaba, the Plaza Alta, the tapas and the shops. What to see in Badajoz on a day out from Alqueva, and how to pair it with Elvas.

Badajoz is 1h20 from Mourão and it's the nearest city of real size. It isn't the prettiest place in the region and that isn't why you go: you go because it has scale, serious tapas and an alcazaba that almost nobody on the Portuguese side has seen.

The alcazaba

This is the main reason to make the trip. The alcazaba of Badajoz is one of the largest surviving Moorish fortifications on the peninsula, with walls you can walk and views over the Guadiana — the same river that forms Alqueva upstream.

It's inside the city rather than on the outskirts, and you walk in without a tour ticket.

The Plaza Alta

An arcaded square with the arches painted in red and white geometric patterns. It's the image that stays with you, and it looks like nothing on the Portuguese side.

The Puerta de Palmas

Two round towers flanking the entrance arch, beside the bridge over the Guadiana. It's the monumental gate to the old city and you see it from a distance.

Eating

This is where Badajoz beats the rest of the region: tapas, at Spanish prices. The city has a real tapeo culture and the old town is full of small places.

One note that ruins a lot of days: Spain is an hour ahead, and lunch is at 2pm or 3pm. Leave Mourão at ten expecting to eat at noon and you'll find everything shut.

Shopping

The practical reason locals cross. Badajoz has malls and chains that don't exist on this side — if you need something you can't buy in Reguengos, it's there.

How to plan the day

The best version takes in both sides of the border, because Elvas is 22 minutes from Badajoz:

  • MorningElvas: walls, aqueduct, historic centre.
  • Lunch — in Elvas at Portuguese prices, or hold out and eat Spanish hours in Badajoz.
  • Afternoon — Badajoz: alcazaba, Plaza Alta, tapas at the end of the day.

It's 1h20 back, so expect a late return. It's worth it — and it's the only plan that gives you two countries in a day without shortchanging either.

Common questions

How far is Badajoz from Mourão?

About 1h20 by car, 81 kilometres. Évora is closer at 50 minutes, but Badajoz is bigger — the only city at this range with that kind of scale.

Do you need anything to cross the border?

There are no border checks between Portugal and Spain. Carry your ID card or passport anyway, and check your car insurance covers Spain, which it normally does.

What time is it in Badajoz?

An hour ahead of Portugal. This is the classic mistake: leaving Mourão at 10am puts you in Badajoz at 12.30 local — and nobody eats lunch in Spain at that hour. Lunch is 2pm or 3pm.

Is it worth going for the shopping?

Yes, if you need large shops. Badajoz has malls and chains that don't exist around here. It's what most locals go there for.
